Despite growing needs, people on the autism spectrum remain under-represented in psychotherapeutic care. At the Special Outpatient Clinic for Social Interaction at Humboldt University in Berlin, researchers have been working with adults on the autism spectrum for many years. Due to a lack of therapeutic treatment approaches, adults on the autism spectrum are consequently often excluded from psychotherapeutic care, even though many of them suffer from chronic overwhelm, social isolation or co-occurring mental health conditions.
This gap is now beginning to close: at the university outpatient clinic, a behavioural therapy manual has been developed – based on many years of clinical experience – specifically for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who have average or above-average intelligence (Dziobek & Stoll, 2019). This workshop will provide an insight into this treatment concept, present further treatment approaches and share the experiences gained through practical work with those affected. The workshop will focus on concrete, practical strategies for therapeutic work with adults on the spectrum. Key target areas such as stress and emotion regulation, self-esteem and social interaction will be addressed. Another focus is on the specific nature of the therapeutic relationship, which often presents different challenges with this target group.
