New GovLab project: winning elections with homophobia?

How do voters respond when parties in parliament openly reject the LGBTQ movement and gender issues and even take concrete measures against them?

Right-wing populist parties have been fueling hostility toward queer communities for years. However, the actual impact of this politics on voting behavior long remained unclear. A new study by the Humboldt GovLab now provides clear answers: anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policies can strengthen the electoral success of the parties that promote them.
