The workshop presents, in an easy-to-understand format, some of the theoretical foundations of translating from Japanese, as well as practical knowledge that can be applied quickly. It is open to beginners and advanced learners ages 14 and up—there will be exercises suited to every level of proficiency. The only prerequisite is the ability to read the syllabaries hiragana and katakana.
In four learning units, participants will discuss possible goals of translation and develop methods tailored to those goals. They will learn about relevant features of the Japanese language and become familiar with various ways to translate words and phrases into German. The workshop focuses on exercises that allow participants to gain their own experience translating from Japanese, both in small groups and individually. Afterward, the proposed solutions will be discussed as a group. Excerpts from well-known anime and manga serve as the basis for the workshop.
The sessions will take place at the Mori-Ōgai Center at HU Berlin, which stands out from the sea of buildings in Berlin-Mitte thanks to the large Japanese characters on its facade.
The price includes learning materials and a small snack.
Dr. Nora Bartels is an educational program coordinator at the Mori Ōgai Center at Humboldt University in Berlin and has been translating books, films, anime, and manga for German-language publishers for more than a decade.
