Conflict Management and Conflict Transformation

Conflict management and conflict transformation are core issues of development work. Development projects are not only affected by conflict, but also run the risk of aggravating existing conflicts in a particular region or even triggering new conflicts.
This training course gives a sound understanding of the phenomenon of conflict, which we will explore on the personal and interpersonal level, as well as on the level of large groups and societies.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course participants will be familiar with the principles of conflict management and conflict transformation. They will have substantially broadened their horizon on the issue of conflict and applied tools to understand its mechanisms and work with it in a non-violent way.

  • Basic terms and concepts
  • Methods of peace and conflict analysis
  • Approaches to conflict transformation
  • Facilitation and mediation processes and skills

Day 4 and 5 will deal intensively with constructive conflict transformationanalysing the conflicting situation and developing strategies for a change.

The detailed course programme will be available soon.

Course Methods
The virtual classroom sessions with the trainer and the fellow participants via Zoom (subject to change) are complemented by group exercises, assignments as well as time for self-study and reflection.

What does live online training mean?
Our online trainings are not pre-recorded training videos, webinars for large audiences or self-paced e-learning courses. They are virtual live trainings delivered by our trainers in real-time, focusing on the interaction of a small group of remote participants. Just like our face-to-face trainings, these virtual classrooms aim at tailoring the discussions and learning experiences to the training needs of the participants.
Requirements: to attend our live online trainings, a reliable high-speed internet connection and a computer or laptop running Windows or iOS are required (including audio and video). The Humboldt-Universität of Berlin uses the videoconferencing platform Zoom (subject to change) for virtual classrooms as well as digital tools such as Moodle. We strongly recommend an external headset for better sound quality

Target Group
Our participants come from all around the globe. They include staff from development agencies, national and international NGOs, national governments, university students and researchers, as well as professionals from the private sector. A good command of English is a prerequisite.
