It all started with a farmer's comment that sewage sludge, the waste product of sewage treatment plants, is mainly transported on highways in trucks. Driven by this absurd statement, the founding team of the EXIST and BSS-funded start-up SHIT2POWER looked into this problem and developed a customized solution for the challenges of municipal sewage treatment plants. The team is now developing scalable container systems that are designed for 30,000 inhabitants and are installed on site at wastewater treatment plants. In a thermo-chemical process, the sewage sludge is recycled locally and renewable energy is generated in the process. In this way, the start-up has created an outstanding innovation that benefits the sustainable energy industry and therefore all of us. The team turns sewage sludge into a valuable resource for generating energy.
